Location: Kyoto | Built: 1973 | Purchased: Summer 2025 | Contractor: Tsuji-Kenzai
Starting the Project
We finally began renovation work on a vacant house we purchased last summer. We’ll share more soon about how we found this place, what we went through to buy it, and what we’re planning.
But today, we just wanted to share something fresh and exciting.

Surprise Above the Ceiling
As we started the demolition, we found something unexpected above the ceiling—an old, solid wooden beam with serious character.

According to the carpenter, the beam is probably much older than the house itself. Back in the 1970s, it was common to reuse old materials when new ones were hard to get. That seems to be the case here.
Turning History into Charm
If we use this beam well, we might be able to transform the space into something that feels like a traditional machiya—a house with a hundred years of history. We’re excited to see how the renovation unfolds from here.
